this is a great article. yew bring up some very interesting points. "Semantic Field As Tag Cloud"
but i have to agree w/ michiel. yer cloud i VERY clutterd. you need to think about word spacing, and css font sizes. you largest if too large i think.

I assume many people try to eliminate unnecessary tags that they have created. I retag items with existing tags that already have a larger number of links. So, an interesting design might be a system that makes this process easier.
<b>Users need to minimize the length of their lists:</b>
I think it is the responsibility of the individual to "tend to" their tag cloud, but the system needs to encourage this and minimize the need to do this housekeeping very frequently.

Graham,
I've always enjoyed the visual thesaurus.
Could you say more about how tag clouds demonstrate span and depth? Sounds like an interesting idea.

Your tag cloud looks great on Safari on my Mac.
Another practical and creative demonstration of semantic fields is the software Visual Thesaurus: <a href="http://www.visualthesaurus.com/" rel="nofollow">http://www.visualthesaurus.com/</a>
I use it constantly and I like its 3D display which many tag clouds try to do through font coloring.
Tags not only demonstrate semantic relationships, but heirarchies. Span AND depth.
Great article.

thanks for the constructive criticism, Michiel. there are a lot of tags in the cloud right now - it's showing all tags ever used.
i think it's early to say that long clouds are definitively bad - we scroll long lists often without much difficulty, and a cloud is at heart a form of list - but i agree that the layout i'm using right now was not designed to incorporate a big cloud in the left column, and needs some work.
to take on some of these issues, i'm planning some changes to the way clouds appear across the site, based on what I've seen working well and not well in this first experiment...
here's my thoughts:
1. create different clouds for different time spans, as you suggested, and a la flickr. maybe an all-time cloud for all tags ever used, a smaller cloud for entries in the last 90 days, and a category specific cloud for each category?
2. offer clouds based on location within the site. the all-time cloud might appear in the archives, with search results, and with tag results. the 90 days cloud might appear on the homepage and on individual entries. the category cloud could appear on the category archive pages, and on the individual archive pages.
how does this sound?

Interesting post. I couldn't help but notice that your own tag cloud on the right sidebar is a cluttered mess. It's longer than my screen (which is bad) and I think it actually impedes navigation.
Have you thought about cutting off all entries with fewer than X mentions?
